It's Wednesday morning. Oof.
My name is Brady, and I’m a writer. I’m from Indiana but now live in New York. And I’m obsessed with how we write.
Did you know that Edith Wharton wrote while in bed? Haruki Murakami runs 10km to balance out waking up at 4 AM to write? Stephen King aims to write six pages a day, whereas Steinbeck just aimed for one? That Hemingway always ended when he knew where to pick up the next day? That Simone de Beauvoir intentionally added time to see her friends into her routine to stay inspired? Everyone is weird and creative in their own ways. But they all had something in common: They all figured out ways to write that worked for them. It’s not rocket science. It’s also not something we really teach or encourage.
That’s why this newsletter comes in.
“7 For Seven” is where I share at least seven links on writing and creativity - for anyone and anything - sent to your inbox by 7 AM EST. Writing advice, what to read, and more. If you’ve never written before, I hope that this newsletter guides and inspires you to start. And if you’re already writing, I hope that this newsletter guides and inspires you to stay creative.
I was compelled to start “7 For Seven” by two specific newsletters that I still love: Austin Kleon’s Friday newsletter and Maria Popova’s Brain Pickings. I would like to think that this space is a continuation and extension of their great work.
Also, each week, I draw ridiculous and lo-fi cartoons. If I can do it, so can you.
The newsletter includes other fun stuff. New fiction is published on the first Friday of every month. And every second and fourth Friday, I interview other writers talking about how they write. “7 For Seven” began in 2017 and transitioned to Substack in 2020.
